Walmer Township is one of the poorest communities in the Eastern Cape. According to previous descriptions poverty is replicating itself due to incomplete educational opportunities. High drop-out rates, a low success rate within graduation and insufficient access to universities are indications of this. The causes are manifold and systemic. They are traceable within the parental home, the social environment, the school system and the school itself.
The low level of education does not only lead to a prospective low income and a consistency of poverty, it also has a direct impact on the high unemployment rate and scarcity of prospects for many young people, often leading to drug and alcohol abuse. The latter also contributes to a steady high level of violence and crime.
