The Youth for Safer Communities (YSC) project is a school safety project by Masifunde funded by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). It is a successful example of youth taking the initiative to make a difference in their schools and communities.
The project motivates the youth to play an active role in their school safety by establishing and running drama groups, debate clubs and empowerment peer-to-peer helping groups in their schools. In total, 300 participants from 26 schools all around Port Elizabeth are involved in the project.
During the years 2013 to 2015, they ran their workshops for over 4.000 Grade 10 learners in 34 high schools all over the Nelson Mandela Bay. In 2016, a citywide campaign against alcohol and drug abuse was launched.
