our centers

Ateljee Architects, under the leadership of Daniel Bezuidenhout, delivered three distinct yet unified spaces in the heart of Walmer township—an incubator for young entrepreneurs, crafted from repurposed shipping containers and two existing RDP houses; a double-storey Montessori pre-school; and our Changemaker Academy, an educational multipurpose centre. Each building has its own unique visual identity, yet they speak the same architectural design language, and their look-and-feel now form the identity and culture of our organisation.

The designs are state-of-the-art in function and form, tailored precisely to our needs. They sit comfortably within the township’s landscape—using familiar materials such as corrugated iron, pallet wood, and echoing the vernacular aesthetic—while introducing a modern, timeless appeal. This balance has drawn attention from people around the world, yet the spaces never feel alien to the local community.

Construction was managed with deep local involvement—engaging community voices, consulting our team, and hiring local labour. The process was inclusive and collaborative, sensitive to local SMMEs, and patient in consultation. Planning and execution were efficient and timely, without compromising quality or participation.

masifunde changemaker academy

The masifunde changemaker academy is the heart of our campus. It offers multi-purpose classrooms, art studios, and event spaces that serve both learners and the broader community. Designed with openness and inclusivity in mind, the award-winning architecture uses light, space, and shared courtyards to inspire learning and connection. Here, children and youth grow into changemakers—equipped with knowledge, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging.

lavel'ilanga montessori pre-school

The masifunde Montessori pre-school offers young children a safe and stimulating start to their educational journey. Designed with playful architecture that integrates treehouses, jungle gyms, and light-filled classrooms, the pre-school blends security with openness to the wider campus. It provides a nurturing space where children learn through exploration, creativity, and care—laying the foundation for lifelong growth and curiosity.

kasi-conomy hub

The kasi-conomy hub is masifunde’s incubator for out-of-school youth, built from repurposed shipping containers and RDP houses. It provides affordable spaces for young entrepreneurs—artisans, hairdressers, baristas, and more—to develop their businesses in a supportive community environment. More than just a business hub, it is a place of skills development, creativity, and opportunity, where youth can gain experience, independence, and pride
